Meet Ghanaian Soldier Making Handbags With Wool And Wood
A 24-year-old Ghanaian soldier, Akosua Abrefi Oduro has designed handbags from wool and wood.
The handcrafted bag is under the brand name Ewuraba Bags and is making waves on social media especially Instagram.
According to Miss Abrefi Oduro, she was motivated to start her business while researching similar bags on the internet.
Her research enabled her to gather information and in no time, she started making bags of her own.
On pricing of her bags she stated that “starting my business, I sold at a low price because I wanted a good client base. Later, the cost of production increased due to branding, so I also increased my prices”.
The Ewuraba Bag is marketed solely on social media and has over 2000 followers on Instagram, who regularly patronize the business.
Miss Abrefi Oduro has made designs for the likes of actress Ama K Abebrese, and British Ghanaian entrepreneur, Akosua Dentaa Amoateng.
She revealed that her bags are not only sold in Ghana but countries such as Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and the United Kingdom.
On blending military life and the art of making handbags, she stated that her colleagues in the military are “amazed” at her ability to run such a demanding business and still report for duty.
This has helped expand her market base, as her colleagues also patronize her work.
To ensure that she does not defy her role as a military officer and an entrepreneur, she revealed that she hired an assistant who helps her in the production and sales.
To her, Instagram is the best site for young people to start their own businesses and be financially independent.
She indicated that it takes sacrificing time, and investing in adverts to promote one’s business online.
“Most days, I sell 10 bags in just a day, depending on the trend, the market, and also who the Instagram ad I run appeals to”, she stated.
