Africa is home to beautiful people with diverse cultures and lifestyles. The continent also houses most mineral resources and as such, can be branded as the wealthiest continent. Yet, almost all the time, the continent’s negative side is what basks in the limelight.

Bra Afrika is a Ghanaian startup that aims to change Africa’s narrative through digital media.

The six-member startup research, capture, and distribute African content in the form of documentaries, stock photos, and articles, mainly to Diasporans and non-Africans.

Additionally, they partner with local markets to produce and sell African-branded products such as kente shirts, beads, caps, etc.

In its short time of existence, Bra Afrika has recorded certain achievements including filming a documentary on the just ended Homowo festival — a festival celebrated by a section of people in Ghana to ridicule and hoot at hunger.

“ We seek to bridge the gap between Africa and the rest of the world. Africa has so many untapped potentials and areas that many do not know about. Young Africans believe they have to leave the continent if they want to succeed. For me, I believe that is false because Africa has a lot of opportunities if only the positive sides will be narrated,” Samuel Okoto, sound, and creative lead stated.

In its journey to tell the African story, Bra Afrika will be spearheading a photo exhibition dubbed “Afrobeadtion” — an event where series of photographic prints of African beads will be displayed. Stories about its origin and meaning will be shared to help people appreciate African beads and culture. The event will take place on the 17th of September.

Bra Africa, which means “come to Africa”, is a product of Ghana Tech Lab’s digital media program. The program equips the youth with digital skills, enough for them to start their businesses or secure jobs.
