As part of measures to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have been cited to aid in prevention of contracting the virus.

The face shield is a type of PPE that is being used with the nose mask.

A prototype design and fabrication expert in an interview with www.digitaltimes.africa threw more light on how face shields are fabricated and produced and also the need to wear face shields as a preventive measure against the virus .

According to Leah Roselyn Agbenyuie, an intern and a prototype design and fabrication expert the face shield serves the purpose of preventing fluids from getting into contact with the wearer.

“Unlike the face masks which only protect your nose and mouth, the face shield allows the entire face to be covered and makes breathing easy” she explained.

The shield can however be used together with the face mask she indicated.

The design of the face shield she explained was sourced openly, redesigned and printed with the help of a 3D printer, she added.

The face shield is designed to fit the face and made from a polylactic acid plastic (PLA) and transparent rubber.

Speaking on the usage of the face shield, Miss Agbenyuie explained that “the transparent rubber can be detached from the frame before putting it in a bag or placed on a table or flat surface”.

On cleaning, she noted that cotton or tissue should be dipped in alcohol or sanitizer and rubbed on the surface of the transparent rubber. The action according to her kills germs and any other bacteria found on the surface of the rubber.

COVID-19 is real and infecting millions of people everyday. Let us observe personal hygiene and use the face masks at all times.
