Disney Partners Kugali Media To Produce Animated Series

Walt Disney Animation Studios has announced a partnership with Pan-African entertainment company Kugali Media to release an African themed sci-fi series in 2022.

Kugali Media was founded by three creatives from Nigeria and Uganda; Tolu Olowofoyeku, Fikayo Adeola and Hamid Ibrahim in 2017 after they got fed up with non-Africans telling African stories. Thus, the trio started the company to tell stories out of the continent.

The friends created a comic book collection called “Iwaju” which means “the future” in the Yoruba language spoken in West Africa.

The story is set in a futuristic Lagos which is Nigeria’s capital city.

Now Iwaju has been picked up by Disney to be adapted from a comic book to a science fiction television series that will reach a wider global audience.

Disney says the animated series will premiere on its Disney+ streaming platform in 2022, calling it a “first-of-its-kind collaboration”. Additionally, the first look at the visual development art from the series was released on its social media handles.

While more specific details about the show are not yet available, Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer, Jennifer Lee, said it will explore themes of “class, innocence and challenging the status quo.”

“Here were three talented comic book artists. Their dream was to bring African stories created by African artists to the world, highlighting the diversity of cultures, histories, and voices across the continent. Their talents as storytellers blew us away. I’m proud to announce the first of its kind collaboration to bring original long for series to Disney+”, she added.

According to Kugali’s website, the show will “combine Disney’s magic and animation expertise with Kugali’s fire and storytelling authenticity”.

The creators believe it is also an opportunity for Disney to tell a modern and authentic African story to the world and correct the global perception of Africa as a continent rather than a country.
